The Vitra Organic Lounge Chair, designed by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen in 1940, is an early landmark of organic modernism, created for the Museum of Modern Art’s “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition in New York.
Its sculptural, biomorphic form was remarkably advanced for its time, anticipating the molded seating designs that would become central to mid-century modern furniture. Please note that the upholstery fabric on the seat is loose and separating rather than sitting tightly against the form, and some, if not all, of the glides on the bottoms of the legs are missing.
