Hailed by Time magazine as the Best Design of the 20th Century, the iconic LCW—short for Lounge Chair Wood base—originated as an experimental project in Charles and Ray Eames' apartment in 1946.
Using what they called the “Kazam! Machine,” they molded plywood by pressing thin sheets of veneer against a heated membrane inflated by a bicycle pump. From this humble setup emerged one of the most celebrated and instantly recognizable chairs in modern design.
